# How to Wipe and Reset Your Trezor to Factory Settings

> Wipe your Trezor device to remove all wallet data before selling, gifting, or troubleshooting. You will need your recovery seed to restore afterward.

There are several reasons you might need to wipe your Trezor and return it to factory settings: selling or gifting the device to someone else, resolving a technical issue that requires a clean slate, or simply starting over with a fresh wallet setup. Wiping erases all locally stored wallet data from the device — including PIN, wallet keys, and settings — but it never touches your funds, which remain safely on the blockchain.

<Warning>
  Before wiping, ensure your recovery seed phrase is complete, legible, and stored safely. After wiping, the only way to restore your funds is with your seed phrase. If you wipe without a valid backup, access to your crypto will be permanently lost.

## Wipe via Trezor Suite

The easiest way to wipe your Trezor is through the Trezor Suite desktop application.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Trezor Suite and connect your device">
    Launch Trezor Suite on your computer and connect your Trezor using the USB cable. Wait for the device to be recognised and unlocked with your PIN.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Go to Settings → Device">
    In Trezor Suite, click the **Settings** icon in the left-hand navigation panel, then select the **Device** tab at the top of the settings page.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Click 'Factory Reset' in the Danger Zone">
    Scroll to the **Danger Zone** section at the bottom of the Device settings page. Click **Factory Reset**. A confirmation dialog will appear explaining what the wipe will do.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm the warning on screen">
    Read the warning carefully. Check the confirmation box to acknowledge that you understand wiping the device will remove all wallet data, then click **Confirm**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm on the device">
    Your Trezor will display a confirmation prompt. **Hold the button** (Model One) or tap **Confirm** on the touchscreen (Model T) to authorise the wipe directly on the device. This physical confirmation step prevents remote or accidental wipes.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Device wipes and restarts">
    The device will erase all stored data and restart automatically. Within a few seconds, it will display the welcome screen, ready for a new setup or wallet recovery.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Wipe via Device Buttons

You can also wipe your Trezor manually without using Trezor Suite, which is useful if the device isn't connecting or you simply prefer the hardware-only method.

**Trezor Model One:**
Hold down both buttons simultaneously while plugging the device into USB. Keep holding until the screen displays the "wipe device" confirmation prompt, then follow the on-screen instructions to confirm.

**Trezor Model T:**
Power on the device and navigate to **Menu → Settings → Device → Factory Reset** directly on the touchscreen. Follow the on-screen prompts to confirm the wipe without needing a computer or Trezor Suite.

## After Wiping

Once the wipe is complete, your Trezor returns to exactly the state it was in when it left the factory. The welcome screen appears, and the device is ready for whatever comes next:

* **Restore your wallet** — use your recovery seed to reload your existing accounts and balances
* **Set up a new wallet** — create a brand-new wallet with freshly generated keys
* **Pass it on** — hand off or sell the device knowing your wallet data has been completely removed

<Tip>
  After wiping, test that your recovery seed works by restoring your wallet immediately. Verify that your balances and accounts appear correctly before using the device for anything new or passing it to someone else. This confirms your backup is valid while you still have a chance to troubleshoot if something looks wrong.
