Creating a new wallet generates a unique set of cryptographic keys directly on your Trezor device. This process produces the seed phrase that controls all of your accounts — it never happens in software, on your computer, or in the cloud. Before you begin, make sure you have Trezor Suite installed, your device is connected, and you have the blank recovery seed card that came in the box ready to write on.
Your private keys are generated entirely on the device and never leave it. Trezor Suite never has access to your seed phrase or private keys at any point during or after wallet creation.

Wallet Creation Steps

1

Open Trezor Suite and connect your device

Launch the Trezor Suite desktop app (or open suite.trezor.io/web in your browser). Connect your Trezor using the included USB cable. Trezor Suite will detect the device and display a setup prompt.
2

Click 'Set up Trezor' when prompted

On the welcome screen, select Set up Trezor. If this is a new device, Trezor Suite may first prompt you to install or update the firmware — complete that step before continuing.
3

Select 'Create new wallet'

You will be offered two options: Create new wallet or Recover wallet. Choose Create new wallet to generate a fresh set of keys. Select Recover wallet only if you are restoring from an existing seed phrase.
4

Agree to the terms and confirm on your device

Review the on-screen terms in Trezor Suite, then confirm your agreement directly on the Trezor device by pressing the button or tapping the screen. Always verify prompts on the device screen — not just in the app.
5

Set your PIN

You will be guided through the PIN setup process. Your PIN protects physical access to the device. Choose a PIN that is at least 4 digits long and not easily guessable. For full details, see the PIN setup guide.
6

Write down your recovery seed

Your Trezor will display your recovery seed phrase — either 12 or 24 words, one at a time — on the device screen. Write each word clearly and in order on your recovery seed card. For full instructions on storing your seed safely, see the seed backup guide.

Standard vs. Shamir Backup

When you begin wallet creation, Trezor Suite asks you to choose a backup type. Understanding the difference helps you pick the right option. Standard Backup generates a single seed phrase of 12 or 24 words. You write it down once and store it in a secure location. This is the most straightforward approach and is recommended for users who are new to hardware wallets. Shamir Backup (available on Trezor Model T) splits your seed into multiple shares using a cryptographic scheme. You define how many shares are created and how many are required to recover the wallet — for example, any 2 out of 3 shares. This adds redundancy and reduces the risk of a single point of failure, but it requires more careful planning and storage. Advanced users with specific security requirements benefit most from this option. If you are setting up your first hardware wallet, choose Standard Backup and focus on storing that single seed phrase securely before exploring more complex schemes.
Each wallet creation generates a completely unique set of keys. You cannot reuse a seed phrase from a previous wallet, and no two devices will ever produce the same seed. If you want to use an existing seed phrase, choose Recover wallet instead.
