Firmware is the software that runs directly on your Trezor device and governs everything from how it displays information to how it signs transactions. Keeping your firmware up to date ensures you have the latest security patches, bug fixes, and support for new cryptocurrencies. Skipping updates can leave your device exposed to vulnerabilities that Trezor has already resolved in newer releases.

Check for Updates

Trezor Suite monitors your device’s firmware version automatically. When a new firmware release is available, a notification banner appears at the top of Trezor Suite as soon as you connect your device. You do not need to manually check for updates — Suite will tell you when one is ready. You can also check your current firmware version at any time by navigating to Settings → Device → Firmware in Trezor Suite.

How to Update Your Firmware

Open Trezor Suite and connect your device

Launch Trezor Suite on your computer and connect your Trezor via USB. Unlock the device with your PIN if prompted.

Start the update

Click the update notification banner that appears at the top of the screen, or navigate manually to Settings → Device → Firmware and click Update firmware.

Review the changelog

Trezor Suite displays the release notes for the new firmware version. Read through the changes, then click Install to begin.

Confirm on the device

Your Trezor will display a confirmation prompt. Hold or press the button(s) on the device to approve the installation.

Wait for the installation to complete

The firmware installs automatically. Do not disconnect your device during this process. Once the installation finishes, your Trezor reboots and reconnects to Trezor Suite with the updated firmware.
Before updating, make sure your recovery seed is backed up and accessible. Firmware updates are safe by design and rarely cause issues, but it is good practice to confirm your seed is stored securely before making any changes to your device. If something unexpected happens, your seed is the only way to restore your wallet.

What Happens to My Wallet

Firmware updates do not affect the private keys or wallet data stored on your device. Your seed, accounts, and balances remain completely intact after an update. The firmware governs how the device operates — not what is stored on it. After rebooting, Trezor Suite reconnects and your wallet appears exactly as it did before the update.

Bootloader Updates

In addition to firmware, Trezor Suite occasionally prompts you to update the bootloader — the lower-level component responsible for starting the device and loading the firmware. When a bootloader update is available, Suite displays a separate prompt with its own changelog. The update process is identical to a firmware update: review the changes, confirm in Suite, and approve on the device.
Trezor Suite cryptographically verifies every firmware and bootloader package before installation. Only official, signed releases from Trezor will be installed on your device. You do not need to manually verify files — Suite handles this automatically to protect you from tampered or counterfeit firmware.
